but why can't he stick to the day job? "actors will do it if they can," shrugs andy evans, one of the authors of fame: the psychology of stardom. his version of david essex's rock on is on the soundtrack of natural nylon's non-eventful gangster flick love, honour and obey. jude law is another young turk of british cinema who has a single to plug. "he's even got a band together." well, it's a start. "the idea of performing in front of a home crowd is very exciting for ewan," says fiona hutchinson of the festival, encouragingly. as a result, he may play at a rock festival, the gig on the green, in glasgow, with eminem, iggy pop, travis and marilyn manson. he was obviously bitten by the singing bug while playing a glamrock star in the film velvet goldmine. "i was watching bono in new york," he declared, "and i thought, i want to do that." ewan's duet with nicole kidman, come what may, entered the charts at no 10 (well, in australia), and the moulin rouge album, featuring mcgregor's vocals, has gone platinum. catherine zeta-jones is in discussions to record an album, and ewan mcgregor is swapping his star wars light sabre for a microphone. now, actors are aiming for gritty credibility by cutting records.
the beatles, bowie, madonna: you hadn't made it until you made it on film. in the old days, rock stars longed to act.
ME AGAINST THE WORLD ALBUM FONT MOVIE
now, actors doing it all for the record! why most movie stars keep trying to make it in music, asks sasha slater. fusion's most essential ingredient is the unanimous musical flow of thought. as the inlay of the album states fusion does not only mean fusing musical concepts and instruments of the east and west. a fusion music project ekatman successfully sees oneness of mind translate into oneness of musical vision. live concerts in promotion of the album have been planned for around the third week of august and going by the group's line-up, they should be something to look forward to. when asked on whether he thinks projects like ekatman will help broaden the appeal of these two niche musical styles he says, yes, i believe this album will be another trendsetter in the music field and it will help people to know more about indian classical music and jazz. the other tracks on the album include reverie that sees majumdar play two complementing ragas - raga bhopali and raja shivranjani, saraswati dedicated to the goddess of music and inspired by the quotations of osho and the album's only vocal track, the patriotic vande mataram. the said track ends with a jugalbandi between sivamani and rajbhatt. hence, the combination of both these things bring out the various emotions of life. speaking on the fascination that both indian and western classical musicians seem to have with the raga, majumdar says, the scale of mian malhar is very unique, which is not found at all in any music and the musical appeal is so deep and joyful. one of the six tracks that make up ekatman is rain based on the seasonal favourite, raga mian malhar. as a result, ekatman sees the formation of a veritable 'super-group' with sivamani in charges of drums and percussion, karl peters on electric bass guitar, rajesh rajbhatt and fazal qureshi on tabla joining majumdar on flute and banks on keyboard. and when majumdar and banks were done composing the album, they assembled some of the best musical talent from both the indian classical and jazz music scenes. he goes on to say, indians playing western music is itself challenging and they are as good as internationally famed artists. more over, i wanted to do a pure fusion in india with indian artists and i couldn't think of a better person than louis who is a serious jazz pianist in india. majumdar whose last album, the spiritually themed dhyana was inspired by pt ravi shankar's chants of india explains how the idea for the album first came to him, when i performed the first time at the osho commune with louis and sivamani, i felt satisfied musically. ekatman created and conceptualised by flautist pt ronu majumdar with keyboardist louis banks sees, for the first time indian classical musicians jamming with indian jazz musicians. indian musicians have collaborated with their western counterparts in the past to great success. along these lines comes ekatman a fusion album with a twist.
and so the idea for a fusion of indian classical music ragas with western jazz is bound to result in the creation of an eclectic, exciting sound, says amit gurbaxani pt ronu majumdar.
An eclectic fusion they have been called two of the most pure musical forms existent.
